Why One Wall Faded and the Others Did Not

South and west elevations take several times the UV load of north walls. After ten years that difference is visible from the street.

Uneven fade is not a defect. Middle Tennessee sun on a south or west wall delivers several times the UV of a shaded north elevation, and after a decade the difference is obvious — particularly where a garage wall faces west.

Why it is uneven

Sun angle and duration. West walls take the hottest part of the day, south walls take the longest exposure, and north walls take almost none.

Dark colours fade more visibly than light ones, and reds and deep blues are the least stable pigments in any siding material.

What can be recovered

A good proportion of apparent fading on vinyl is actually oxidation and surface dirt rather than pigment loss. Washing with an appropriate cleaner often restores more colour than owners expect.

Test an inconspicuous area first. If washing restores it, the problem was chalk and grime; if it does not, the pigment has genuinely gone.

  • Wash first — much apparent fade is oxidation
  • Test in a hidden area before committing
  • Vinyl-safe paint exists but is a real commitment
  • Painted fibre cement simply repaints
  • Replacing one elevation rarely matches

Painting vinyl

It can be done with paints formulated for vinyl, which stay flexible and are limited to colours no darker than the original — a darker colour absorbs more heat and warps the panel.

It also ends the maintenance-free proposition permanently, since painted vinyl then needs repainting like any other painted surface.

Replacing part of a wall

Matching aged siding is very difficult. New panels of the same product will not match a wall that has been in Nashville sun for fifteen years, even from the same manufacturer.

The usual approach is to replace a full elevation to a natural break, or to take material from a hidden elevation for the repair and put new material where it is least visible.

FAQ

Why One Wall Faded and the Others Did Not — questions

Can faded vinyl siding be restored?

Sometimes substantially. Much of what looks like fade is oxidation and atmospheric grime, and a proper wash with a vinyl-appropriate cleaner brings back more colour than most people expect. Where the pigment itself has degraded, the only options are painting with a vinyl-safe product or replacement.

Will new siding match my existing siding?

Rarely, on a wall that has weathered for more than a few years. Manufacturers change formulations and the existing material has faded. For a repair, taking panels from a concealed elevation and putting the new material there is the standard trick for an invisible result.

Does fading mean the siding is failing?

No. Fading is a cosmetic UV effect and faded vinyl usually still sheds water perfectly well. What indicates actual failure is cracking, brittleness when flexed, panels coming loose from the locking course, or warping — those are structural and warrant attention.
